He is a bilingual who can speak both English and American Sign Language learned in schools when he grew up. In 2008, he found a live video platforms site called Justin.tv brought by fighting game community who hosted their channel previously and started streaming first few games in 2009 with Street Fighter IV, Final Fantasy XI Online and Halo 3 before revamped Twitch in 2011.
